Sample Answer: Industries in Brazil’s Economy

Task: The bar chart illustrates the percentage share of five industries in Brazil’s economy in 2009 and 2019, with a forecast for 2029. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart compares the contributions of five industries to Brazil’s economy in 2009 and 2019, and provides predictions for 2029.

Overall, finance is expected to become the largest sector by 2029, with its share rising steadily throughout the period. By contrast, manufacturing is forecast to experience a substantial decline. Food processing is predicted to return to its original level, while tourism is expected to remain stable and the oil, coal and gas industry to fall after its increase in 2019.

In 2009, finance accounted for 31% of Brazil’s economy. This figure increased to 36% in 2019 and is projected to reach 41% in 2029. The share of food processing was initially 10%, before more than doubling to 21% in 2019; however, it is forecast to drop back to 10% by 2029.

Manufacturing represented 21% in 2009, but its contribution fell to 16% ten years later and is predicted to decrease sharply to just 5% in 2029. Tourism declined from 25% to 21% between 2009 and 2019, and this figure is expected to remain unchanged in 2029. Similarly, oil, coal and gas made up 25% in 2009, peaked at 30% in 2019, and is forecast to return to 25% by 2029.
