It is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary schools rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

In this contemporary era, learning a foreign language at an early age has become increasingly common. Many people believe that children should begin studying a foreign language in primary school rather than waiting until secondary school. Although this approach may place additional pressure on young learners, I believe that its advantages, such as greater language proficiency and enhanced cognitive development, far outweigh the disadvantages.

On the one hand, one of the greatest benefits of introducing a foreign language in primary school is that children are more likely to achieve a high level of fluency. Young learners naturally absorb new languages more easily than older students, allowing them to develop better pronunciation, vocabulary, and communication skills. Furthermore, they have many more years to practise and refine their language abilities before entering adulthood. For example, in countries such as the Netherlands, English is introduced at an early age, and more than 95% of adults are able to speak it fluently. This demonstrates that early exposure to a foreign language leads to greater long-term proficiency.

Another significant advantage is that learning a second language enhances children's cognitive abilities. Research has shown that bilingual children often develop stronger analytical, problem-solving, and reasoning skills. In addition, learning another language improves memory, concentration, and multitasking abilities. For instance, a survey conducted by Oxford University found that children who began learning a foreign language before the age of five performed better in subjects such as mathematics and science. Therefore, early language learning contributes not only to linguistic development but also to overall academic success.

On the other hand, some people argue that introducing a foreign language too early may place unnecessary pressure on children. Managing multiple languages alongside other academic subjects can sometimes cause stress and confusion, particularly for young learners who are still developing their basic literacy skills. Consequently, some children may struggle to balance their workload during the early years of schooling.

In conclusion, although learning a foreign language at primary school may increase academic pressure to some extent, the benefits of achieving greater fluency and improving cognitive development clearly outweigh this drawback. Therefore, I strongly believe that children should begin learning foreign languages as early as possible
