14 Questions About the OET Letter Layout Answered

The OET Writing sub-test requires candidates to write a letter based on case notes. Below are 14 essential layout questions with simple explanations.

1. Difference between 'Yours sincerely' and 'Yours faithfully'

Yours sincerely — when you know the recipient’s name.
Yours faithfully — when writing to “Sir/Madam”.

2. Signing the letter

Do not write your own name. End with your job title (e.g., Registered Nurse).

3. Number of paragraphs

Ideal structure: 3–5 paragraphs (introduction + details + recommendations).

4. Closing sentence

Use a polite line: “Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.”

5. Capitalisation in the address

Capitalize names, job titles, and places.

6. Date placement

Write the date on the left, usually below the address.

7. Reference line content

Include patient name + DOB.
Example: Re: Mr. John Doe, DOB: 12/03/1975

8. Marking based on lines

Marking depends on word count, not number of lines.

9. Word limit calculation

The count begins at your first sentence. Target: 180–200 words.

10. Writing in block capitals

Allowed for paper test, not recommended for computer-based OET.

11. Spacing between sections

Leave one blank line between paragraphs. No indentation needed.

12. Writing below the last line

Avoid writing beneath the boundary line. Use an extra page if necessary.

13. Planning

Use the rough space provided. Delete planning notes before submission.

14. British or American spelling

Both accepted — but stay consistent.
