IELTS Listening β€” Overview & Practice

IELTS Listening β€” Overview & Practice

Essential guide for Academic & General Training Listening β€” sections, question types, timing, and proven strategies.

Test at a glance

Duration: 30 minutes listening + 10 minutes transfer time (for paper test). There are 4 sections and 40 questions.

Tip: Audio is played once only. Focus on prediction, active listening, and transferring answers carefully in the last 10 minutes if required.

Structure β€” 4 sections

  1. Section 1: A conversation in a social context (e.g., booking, information) β€” easier.
  2. Section 2: A monologue in a social context (e.g., talk about local facilities).
  3. Section 3: A conversation in an educational/training context (e.g., tutor-student discussion).
  4. Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject (e.g., lecture) β€” hardest.

Common question types

  • Multiple-choice
  • Form / Note / Table / Flow-chart / Diagram completion
  • Matching (features, headings, speakers)
  • Sentence completion
  • Short-answer questions
  • Labeling a diagram or map

Spelling and word limits matter β€” follow instructions (e.g., "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS").

Key strategies

  1. Predict before audio: Read questions quickly during the pause and predict possible answer types (name, number, noun).
  2. Listen for signpost words: however, in addition, firstly, that's because β€” these show structure and emphasis.
  3. Write while listening: don't wait until the end; capture keywords, numbers, and names.
  4. Watch for paraphrase: the speaker's words often differ from the question's wording.
  5. Transfer answers carefully: if using paper, use the 10-minute transfer time to copy answers neatly; check spelling & plurals.
  6. Stay calm after missing an answer: quickly move on to predict the next one β€” every question counts.

Practice drills

  1. Prediction drill β€” stop audio before answer and try to guess answer type & word class.
  2. Dictation drill β€” write exactly what you hear for short extracts to improve accuracy.
  3. One-play practice β€” listen to a passage once and answer all 10 questions to simulate test conditions.
  4. Spot-check β€” after practicing, check spelling, synonyms, and paraphrase matches.

Scoring & timing

Each correct answer = 1 mark. Raw score (0–40) converted to Band (0–9). Keep steady accuracy across sections β€” Section 4 carries more difficult academic language.

Common pitfalls

  • Not reading questions during pauses β€” you must predict.
  • Writing full sentences when only a word or number is required.
  • Missing plural/singular or incorrect spelling.
  • Panic if you miss one answer β€” it affects focus on following ones.

Sample weekly practice plan

  1. Day 1: 30-minute focused practice on Section 1 & 2 (prediction + one-play).
  2. Day 2: 30-minute focused practice on Section 3 & 4 (lecture-style notes).
  3. Day 3: Full listening test (40 Qs) under timed conditions + review.
Note: If you take the computer-delivered test, answers are typed directly and there is no extra transfer time β€” still practice typing quickly and checking spelling.
